More and more hotels are going green ….this does not only help the environment, it reduces operating costs adding value to the asset. The hotel industry has been practicing “green initiatives” since the 1990’s and is saving the environment by limiting greenhouse gasses, energy, and water use. It is amazing that a hotel can decrease its energy consumption by 20-40% without affecting performance by implementing just a few changes.
The hotel industry worldwide is increasingly being regulated for waste, water, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy use. Being aware of environmental hazards will make the “going green initiative” a concept that most hotels can do without the consumer evening noticing. It is estimated that by reusing bath towels and linens, a mid-sized hotel can conserve approximately 6,000 gallons of water and 40 gallons of laundry detergent per month. That’s 72,000 gallons of water and 480 gallons of laundry detergent per year.
Starwood’s Aloft brand has initiated using refillable shampoo and body-wash dispensers at some properties and is reviewing rolling out this initiative at additional locations. A typical hotel can dispose of approximately 25,000 to 30,000 plastic shampoo bottles a year.
